DEVELOPING READING

small_logoDear Parent/Carer

At Brierley School we are always working towards improving children’s reading, please find detailed below information about reading with your child.  The reading expectation for your child’s year group can be viewed by following the links below, so that you can see the high expectations that your child is working towards.

In school children are reading a lot of the time in different ways.

  • In class with a partner or independently.
  • During phonics sessions.
  • Reading Buddies – each week the children read with children in another class.
  • Guided reading – an extra session added to our curriculum where children read a shared book with an adult in a small group.
  • Class texts – read together on the whiteboard.
  • Class texts – read individually or with a partner.
  • Teacher reading texts using a higher range of age appropriate vocabulary.
  • Instructions given on the board for lesson activities.
  • On a one to one basis with staff and volunteers in school – reception class to Year 5.
  • Year 6 – thirty minutes daily guided reading – focus for SATs.
  • Reading comprehension – read a text and answer questions about it – literal and inferred.
  • Primary age newspapers.
  • Internet research.
  • Visits to our library.

Please listen to your child read as often as possible.  A mixture of fiction and non-fiction will help your child develop their reading and understanding skills.  Encouraging your child to retell the story, talk about the characters and plot, and recall factual information is a valuable way of developing understanding.

IT IS ESSENTIAL THAT YOUR CHILD BRINGS THEIR READING FOLDER ON A DAILY BASIS.  THIS ENSURES CONTINUATION OF THE BOOK BEING READ.  IT IS ALSO A USEFUL PLACE TO KEEP ALL SCHOOL DOCUMENTATION FOR YOUR CHILD SUCH AS HOMEWORK AND LETTERS.
