Pupil care and well-being
If you have any concerns or worries or any information
that you feel we ought to know about, please don’t
hesitate to get in touch.
Booking holidays
Could parents of Year 6 children note that the SATs examinations
will take place from Monday 14th May to Friday 18th May
2012? Children in year 6 should not take holidays during
this week. We are seeking to improve our school attendance
during the Spring Term please try to ensure that your child
attends whenever possible, absent days mean missed learning!
School Governors
Just to remind you that the ballot for our parent governor
vacancy closes this Friday.
Indoor Shoes
With the inclement weather during the winter months we
are encouraging all of the children to bring an old pair
of bedroom slippers or plimsolls to wear inside school.
Out Of School Club – Playworks
If you would like to book your child in between 3.15 and
6.00 during this term then contact Heather on 0799 900 0829.
Shining Stars
Watch out for our new ‘Shining Stars’ certificates.
The children will start to bring home these new certificates
from Friday, these replace the Special Mentions that we
used previously.
School website
Please feel free to access our school web page www.brierleyschool.com
(no need - you're there now!). In the very near future,
for your information, we will have all our school polices
available.
Winter seems to be passing without last year’s disruption
(fingers crossed!), however the website will have the latest
information as to whether school is open or closed.

Dear Parent/Carer
Remembrance Service and Children in Need
Thank you to the children, staff and parents who helped
to make these events such a success. Of the School Church
Choir the musical director of Grimethorpe Colliery Band
said that their performance was “Spellbinding”
and “Magical”.
Mrs Fella’s class raised £26.00 to donate to
the Royal British Legion with their ‘poppy buns’.
Last Friday the children easily succeeded in covering Pudsey
Bear’s face with coins, we raised £172 for this
good cause.

We will be holding a book fair between Monday November 28th
and Thursday 1st December. Books will be on sale between

unwanted gifts or bric-a-brac, these will be gratefully
received. One of our parent governors, Mrs Garner, is wanting
as much help as possible with the fair, please give her

November 2011
Dear Parent/Carer
INDOOR SHOES
It’s that time of year again! Could you help us to
try and keep school clean by providing a pair of indoor
shoes for your child to change into during the winter months?
REMEMBRANCE SUNDAY
We will be holding a special assembly for the children on
Friday remembering this special time and some of Class FS,
with Miss Simpson, will be laying a wreath at St Luke’s
church on Sunday.
HARVEST FESTIVAL
Many thanks for the harvest gifts. Miss Simpson’s
class distributed the produce to the elderly residents of
the village and we have received several letters of thanks.
SCHOOL SPORTS
We have recently been very active in our participation of
school sport. The children have represented our school in
a cross-country run. We were really impressed by their sportsmanship
and enthusiasm. We have also been involved in a football
tournament and a match against Burton Road. Our year 6 children
have been trained as team leaders to support the school
with outdoor play

schools is Friday November 18th. Please note that parents
can also apply online at www.barnsley.gov.uk and follow
the links.
HOLIDAYS DURING TERM TIME
Please be mindful of not taking holidays during term time,
it has a detrimental effect on the children’s continuity
and progression of learning

Attendance Matters
We hope that you will adhere to the school holidays when
booking you family breaks. Children’s progress is
hindered when they are not at school and taking holidays
during team times really compounds this problem. Brierley’s
attendance for the spring term was well below the average
for Barnsley Schools, much of which was due to holidays.
We informed you last term that no holiday will be authorised
during half-term one and if any pupil’s attendance
is below 95% this will also trigger an unauthorised absence.
Such absences are subject to a local authority fine. Please
help us help your child!
N.B PARENTS/CARERS OF CHILDREN WHO ARE IN YEAR 6 IN SEPTEMBER.
