PSHE

 

Intent

PSHE at Brierley CE Primary School helps pupils to develop themselves, their understanding of the world and their ability to communicate their feelings.  It also helps pupils to acquire British Values, resilience and attitudes which are necessary if they are to make sense of their experiences within school and life itself.

 

Effective PHSE will enable Brierley pupils to value themselves, respect others, differences and diversity and feel confident and informed as a British Citizen, enabling them to form the effective, fulfilling relationships that are an essential part of life and learning.

 

Brierley Primary School will also ensure that both boys and girls are prepared for the changes that adolescence brings and will draw on the knowledge of the human life cycle set out in the National Curriculum for Science.

 

RSE will be tailored to the age and the physical and emotional maturity of our pupils.

 

 

Implementation

Teachers use the Jigsaw scheme of work as the basis for panning their PSHE lessons.

We encourage all our children to take part in a range of practical roles and activities that promote active citizenship: School Councillor, Playground Leader, Workship Ambssador, Assembly Monitor, Reading Buddy, local events and whole school fundraising.

 

We have introduced the Archbishop of York Young Leaders Programme this year too.  Children have opportunities to meet and work with members of the community, such as: health workers, firefighters, police officers, sports coaches, secondary school pupils, artists, authors, musicians and representatives from the local churches. We participate in, and promote National events such as: Anti-Bullying Week, Safer Internet Day, National Holocaust Day, Remembrance Day. 

 

We are committed to supporting the mental health and wellbeing of all pupils at Brierley CE Primary School and are working towards the nationally recognised mental health award for schools.

We have a dedicated, well trained team of staff who support the mental wellbeing of our pupils either through one to one or through small group sessions. 

This is where children time and space to talk through their worries about school, friendships, family, or significant events such as bereavement or parents separating.

 

Impact

PSHE, as well as being taught as a discrete subject, is also embedded throughout the curriculum and the day to day life of the school. Through its successful  implementation, children develop:
