We Are Readers And Writers

Autumn 1

As readers, the children will be encouraged to read independently on a daily basis with emphasis on showing an understanding of the text by answering comprehension questions. The children will complete a star reader quiz using Accelarated Reader which will determine the level of reading book that they can choose from our school library. Before changing a read book, the children must complete and pass a quiz to show their understanding of the text.

As a class, the children will also be read to by an adult and will answer whole class reading questions that focus on vocabulary, inference and retrieval. 

Our class text this half term is The Hobbit by JRR Tolkien.

As writers, the children will begin the year by writing a biography of JRR Tolkien. They will have the opportunity to recap the key features and skills required to write a biography before researching the life of JRR Tolkien and choosing the key facts to include in their biographies.

Once the children have completed their biographies they will draw their attention to writing a setting description of Hobiton and Bilbo Bagins' home.
