Mathematics

As mathematicians, the children will begin the Autumn term by developing their understanding of place value. They will learn to read, write, represent and partition numbers up to 1,000,000, exploring different ways to compose and decompose large numbers. The children will use this knowledge to find 10, 100, 1,000, 10,000 and 100,000 more or less than a given number, round numbers to a variety of place values and interpret scales, including those containing negative numbers.

Once the children have secured their understanding of place value, they will apply this knowledge to addition and subtraction. They will use formal written methods to add and subtract numbers with more than four digits, estimate and check answers through rounding, and solve increasingly complex multi-step problems. Throughout the unit, children will explain their reasoning and use strategies such as bar models to support their mathematical thinking
