Welcome to Class Tolkien 2023-2024
We would like to say a warm welcome to all our new Year 5 children starting in Class Tolkien this September!
Meet Your Teachers
Mr Willetts - Class Teacher
Mrs Arnold - Teaching Assistant
Mrs Sapey - Higher Level Teaching Assistant
In year 5 we will begin to prepare the children for their SAT's in year 6. There will be an important focus on ensuring the children have a secure knowledge of all multiplications following the children’s hard work in gaining excellent scores in their multiplication checks in year 4.
There is a continued emphasis on reading and the children will have the opportunity to read independently and will be read to by an adult everyday and will have access to our school library and reading areas as we encourage and support the children's love of reading.
As with every class at Brierley CofE Primary school, we aim to build positive relationships with the children and their parents/carers, if you have any questions or require support from the teaching staff please ask any of the teaching staff in Class Tolkien or call the main office and we will do our very best to help.
Please read our termly letters to parents as they will inform you of the topics and units being taught in each subject and we will also update the subject pages linked above with information and pupil work throughout the year.
Easter Art Competition
Congratulations to Ally won 1st place in Class Tolkien's Easter Art Competition, in 2nd place was Poppy and 3rd Place Harrison. Well done to all of Year 5 who took their time to draw some beautiful pieces of work.
Bikeability
This week (21st January), Class Tolkien participated in our Bikeability event. The wee consisted of a baseline assessment on the playground where all children had the opportunity to ride a bike and learn basic road safety skills. For the remainder of the week, children who passed the level 1 day had the opportunity to take their bikes onto the road. The week offered the vital skills and knowledge of road safety when riding bikes.
Corageous Advocacy
Ally in Year 5 and Millie in Year 6 did an exceptional job of raising money for Barnsley Hospital's neonatal department.
The girls were making bracelettes and buns and decided they wanted to sell them and raise money to help a good cause.
Millie explained that the neonatal department helps parents and children who are born prematurely and she hoped the money raised will make a difference to a family in need.
Ally added that she hopes the money helps with the research needed to find cures and new medicines for poorly children.
We are amazingly proud that the girls decided to take their own time at home to think of others and that they wanted to make a difference to families in our community. Well done girls!!
Harvest Festival
The children complete some lovely harvest art in preperation for our harvest festival. They showcased their art at our Harvest Show whilst informing the audience of the meaning of Harvest.
